Investigation Regarding the Issue of Fines in Aggregate Used for Soil Absorption Systems

Investigation Regarding the Issue of Fines in Aggregate Used for Soil Absorption Systems

Commonwealth of Massachusetts Regulations pertaining to the installation of onsite septic systems require that base aggregate used for leaching structures be “free of iron, fines and dust in place.” Absent of any field testing procedure for aggregate. it is difficult for contractors or inspectors to reasonably ensure adherence to the intent of the regulation. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether any rapid field tests for aggregate quality were in use in other jurisdictions and to research, in a preliminary way, factors for consideration in the assessment of aggregate in the field.

Monitoring Alternative Onsite Septic Systems

Monitoring Alternative Onsite Septic Systems

Innovative/Alternative (I/A) septic systems are devices most often situated ahead of a soil absorption system to achieve pretreatment of wastewater prior to dispersal into soils… This booklet makes recommendations for all participants in the I/A system approval process to improve the likelihood that performance data can inform decisions and improve overall systems operations

Operation of the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center -2001-2011

In support of local boards of health and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental protection, the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment continued to operate the Massachusetts Alternative Septic System Test Center (MASSTC) during this grant period. In addition to facilitating the testing and development of advanced onsite wastewater treatment systems, we have drafted a testing protocol for alternative drainfield products for possible incorporation into the Commonwealth’s approval process.

Performance of Innovative/Alternative Onsite Septic Systems for the Removal of Nitrogen in Barnstable County, Massachusetts 1999-2007

Performance of Innovative/Alternative Onsite Septic Systems for the Removal of Nitrogen in Barnstable County, Massachusetts 1999-2007

A web-based reporting system for performance samples from innovative alternative (I/A) onsite septic systems has been implemented in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Nitrogen removal data from a total of 557 individual systems; 487 single-family installations and 70 multi-family installations are presented. When systems having four or more samples are considered, 69% of the 297 single-family systems and 60% or the 50 multi-family I/A systems have medians that meet a regulatory discharge standard of 19 mg/L or less of total nitrogen. Results from individual technologies are presented. The difficulties in assessing the performance of I/A technologies using such data are discussed.
