Ultrasounds Reveal Effects of Smoking During Pregnancy

Know someone who’s smoking while pregnant? They need to see this.
Dr Nadja Reissland, of Durham University, said the ultrasound scans show unborn babies of mothers who smoke may have delayed development of their central nervous systems. Scans reveal fetuses carried by smokers touch their faces more than those carried by non-smokers – a sign of delayed development. Fetuses normally touch their mouths and faces much less as they become more developed closer to their birth. The 4-D ultrasound scans show smoking during pregnancy can lead to a delay in the baby’s central nervous system. Researchers say the shocking images could be used to encourage pregnant women to give up smoking.
