| To speak with someone concerning West Nile Virus
(WNV) during business hours, or to leave a telephone message concerning
a dead bird report, please call the State WNV information line at (866)
MASS-WNV or (866) 627-7968.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) will be relying
on dead bird reports, particularly Crow and Blue Jay, as part of their
surveillance program to provide an early warning of where the risk of
WNV transmission to humans may be developing.
Testing of Dead Birds
Dead bird reports to MDPH Public Health information line at (866) 627-7968
will be recorded in the Geographic Infomation System (GIS) and some of
the reported Crows and Blue Jays will be selected for testing. Callers
will be informed if the bird is to be tested and the MDPH will co-ordinate
with town officials to arrange for he safe collection and transport for
testing. Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment Laboratory
will serve as a bird repository for all birds on Cape Cod which have been
selected for testing. No birds will be accepted at the County repository
unless they are assigned a state tracking number by the MPDH and properly
packaged.
