The Barnstable County Public Health Nursing Division, located within the Barnstable County Department of Health and Environment, offers a wide variety of health-related activities and services to Barnstable County residents. Our professional nursing staff directs efforts toward educating people about health issues, investigating health problems and providing immunizations, and engaging in community partnerships to identify and solve health problems.
TICK AND LYME DISEASE EDUCATION
All public and private schools in the county are offered a free 30 minute educational presentation which is appropriate for the grade level. Educational presentations are also offered to any community group. Our goal is to intensify awareness about ticks and Lyme disease in an area endemic to the disease. New to the program is a 30 minute power point presentation for a teacher inservice aimed at raising awareness of Lyme disease in the educational setting.
SUN SAFETY AND SKIN CANCER AWARENESS
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Our UV Skin Analyzer has been a huge success in some of the local high schools with over 500 students in May 2011 viewing the sun damage on their faces. Cape Cod and the Islands has over 50 tanning beds and part of the program stresses the dangers of indoor tanning. Our goal is to bring the skin analyzer in to all the high schools next year before prom season. In conjunction with our MRC coordinator, the UV Skin Analyzer is requested at many health and wellness fairs throughout the county.
PUBLIC SAFETY PERSONNEL SERVICES
We provide TB testing, vaccination clinics, and any of our educational programs to the county’s fire, police, and DPW departments.
In collaboration with the Municipal Health Group, we offer health screenings to all municipal employees. This includes blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and HDL testing, skin analysis, hearing test, and bone density screenings. All screenings are accompanied by corresponding literature and health counseling by nurses.
In cooperation with MADPH and local boards of health in the county, read access to the MA Virtual Epidemiological Network is being instituted. This will allow the county public health nurse to view and monitor the number of cases of infectious disease in real time. This will help to identify and address any trends in commonly reported diseases.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS FAIRS
Offered free to any nonprofit community group. Literature provided is applicable to the age group. We can also provide health screenings and information regarding prevention.
ASK A PUBLIC HEALTH NURSE PROGRAM
Designed to bring public health information, blood pressure screening, and access to a public health nurse to clients at Cape food pantries and the WIC office in Hyannis at no cost.
SUBSIDIZED HOUSING PROGRAM
In conjunction with local housing authorities, health screenings are offered free of charge to residents of subsidized housing at the housing location. Screenings include blood pressure, pulse, cholesterol, glucose, HDL, bone density, skin analysis, and hearing. We also include a nutritionist and other human services organizations. Health information and health literacy are vital components.
